Like the rest of the global metal community, we were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Di’Anno this week. Paul was a groundbreaking pioneer in the music world. His vocal contributions on those first two Iron Maiden albums alone helped pave the way for entire genres of hard rock and metal to come. His post-Maiden work with Battlezone, Killers, and even more recently with Warhorse display his musical evolution and commitment to his craft as a singer, songwriter, and commanding frontman.
Icarus Witch had the rarest of privileges when we were invited to not only open for Paul’s return to the North American touring scene in 2010 but to also serve as his backing band for every show. On two extensive tours, we forged a professional working relationship with this elder statesman of traditional metal who taught us so much. More importantly, we forged the type of deep friendship bonds that can only happen when you go to battle night after night on the road with a group of musicians.
Before meeting Paul in person for the first time, we were intimidated. His reputation as “The Beast” preceded him. He was a complex character with a legendary past full of stories and history (much of which could be considered dangerous). The Paul we came to know was a kind-hearted, dedicated, music-loving, fan-appreciating, road warrior who took us under his wing and became something of a protective, proud father figure in a way. He’d brag about “His awesome American band” in interviews, wear our shirts on stage, and regale us with incredible, funny, and shocking stories to pass the long hours on the road between cities.
There’s a lot more we could say about this icon, and perhaps someday we will. Some day when the emotions aren’t so raw. For now, we raise our glasses as a libation to a metal god, a giant among men, and a beloved friend to the end. Blessed be, mate. Hail the traveler.
